 | Having managed through their own economic disaster a few years back, executives of office furniture makers in western Michigan have a battle-driven perspective or two to offer the rest of the state. Asked at the NeoCon trade show what they learned during the industry's devastating downturn of 2001 to 2004 and how it could aid Michigan's long-suffering economy, executives offered varying ideas. Some common themes emerged, which in many respects are obvious common-sense business: Develop clear vision and goals and communicate exactly where you want to go, decide what's really important and get rid of what's not, and have a willingness to make fundamental changes needed to adapt to the hand you're dealt. "The biggest thing that we learned throughout that was you have to, in those points of time, get very clear about what your primary objective is and, in particular, what's the biggest problem you're going to solve for the long run to be able to grow and be prosperous," Herman Miller Inc.
